Squalane
Squalane — in skincare
Squalane is a light, stable oil that mirrors squalene, one of the natural lipids in skin's own sebum. It is usually made from olives or sugarcane and hydrogenated so it does not go rancid. In skincare it softens and smooths without a greasy feel, which is why it suits almost every skin type.
What it does for skin
Squalane helps keep moisture in, makes skin feel soft and supple and gives a healthy, non-oily glow. It supports a dry or stressed barrier and helps creams spread evenly.
Who it suits
Dry, normal, combination, sensitive and mature-looking skin. Oily skin usually tolerates it well too.
How to use it
Squalane usually comes inside a cream, lotion or ampoule, so use it in the step the product is made for: lotions and ampoules after toner, creams and balms last. Use it morning and evening, with sunscreen on top in the morning. It pairs well with retinol, ceramides and hyaluronic acid.

Frequently asked
What is squalane, and how is it different from squalene?
Squalene, found in sebum and some plant oils, oxidises easily. Squalane is its hydrogenated, stable form, so it keeps well and does not go rancid.
Is squalane good for oily or acne-prone skin?
Usually, yes. It is light, absorbs quickly and is considered unlikely to clog pores, so oily skin can use it for hydration without heaviness.
Can I combine squalane with retinol, acids or vitamin C?
Yes. Squalane has no known conflicts and is often used with retinol to make it easier to tolerate.
How fast does squalane work?
Right away: skin feels softer and smoother after one use. A calmer, better-hydrated barrier builds over a few weeks of daily use.
