Retinol is a form of vitamin A and one of the best-studied skincare ingredients for visible signs of ageing. Over months it speeds up skin renewal, smoothing the look of texture and fine lines, evening tone and helping keep pores clear.
What it does for skin
Skin looks smoother, more even and firmer over months, not weeks. Early dryness, flaking or redness is common and usually settles as skin adjusts.
Who it suits
Normal, oily and combination skin with uneven texture, fine lines or clogged pores. Sensitive skin can try low-strength formulas. Avoid retinol during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless your doctor approves.
How to use it
Apply a few drops of a retinol serum in the evening to dry skin after toner, then moisturizer. Beginners do best with about 0.1–0.3% retinol. Avoid the corners of the eyes and lips, and wear SPF 30 or higher every morning, even in winter.
