PHA
PHA — in skincare
PHA (polyhydroxy acid), such as gluconolactone, is the gentlest family of exfoliating acids. Its larger molecules work more slowly than AHAs such as glycolic acid, so it is less likely to sting. PHA also attracts water, so it exfoliates and hydrates at the same time.
What it does for skin
PHA gently loosens dead surface cells, so skin looks smoother, brighter and more even and pores look clearer, without the dryness stronger acids can cause.
Who it suits
Sensitive skin and beginners to exfoliating acids, as well as dull, rough or congested skin that does not tolerate AHA or BHA well.
How to use it
Use a PHA toner after cleansing, once a day or every other day, then serum and cream. Wear sunscreen every morning, and avoid layering it with retinol on the same night.

Frequently asked
What is PHA in skincare?
A group of gentle exfoliating acids, mostly gluconolactone and lactobionic acid. They smooth and brighten the skin surface while helping it hold moisture.
PHA, AHA or BHA: which is the gentlest?
PHA. AHAs work faster and BHA works inside pores, while PHA is the mildest choice for sensitive skin.
Can I use PHA every day?
Many people can, especially in a gentle centella toner. Start every other day and increase if skin stays comfortable.
