Glutathione — in skincare

Glutathione

Glutathione is an antioxidant made of three amino acids that the body produces on its own. In Korean skincare it is used for glow: it helps skin look brighter and more even and helps defend against the everyday stress that leaves skin looking dull.

What it does for skin

As an antioxidant, glutathione helps neutralise free radicals from sun and pollution. Over time, it helps skin look more radiant and softens the look of dullness and uneven tone. Evidence for glutathione on its own is still limited, which is why brands combine it with better-studied brighteners.

Who it suits

Dull, tired-looking skin and uneven tone, including dark spots and post-blemish marks. It is gentle, so most skin types, including sensitive skin, tolerate it well.

How to use it

Apply a glutathione serum after toner, then cream, morning or evening. Daily SPF matters most for an even tone, because sun exposure darkens spots faster than any serum can fade them.

Frequently asked

What does glutathione do in skincare?

It is an antioxidant that helps skin look brighter and more even, especially when paired with niacinamide, tranexamic acid or vitamin C.

Is a glutathione serum the same as glutathione supplements or drips?

No. A serum or cream works on the skin surface as a cosmetic antioxidant. Supplements and drips are a separate topic to discuss with your doctor.

Can I combine glutathione with vitamin C, niacinamide or retinol?

Yes. Glutathione has no known conflicts with common actives, and vitamin C and niacinamide are its most common partners.

How fast does glutathione work?

Skin can look fresher within a couple of weeks. Changes in uneven tone and dark spots usually take 8–12 weeks of daily use with sunscreen.
