AHA — in skincare

AHA

AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids), most often glycolic and lactic acid, are water-soluble exfoliating acids. They loosen dead cells on the skin's surface, so skin looks smoother, brighter and more even.

What it does for skin

With regular use, AHAs refine rough texture, soften the look of dullness and post-blemish marks, and help pores look smaller. Glycolic acid works fastest; lactic acid is gentler. Korean pore products usually pair them with BHA (salicylic acid), which works inside pores.

Who it suits

Normal, oily and combination skin with dullness, rough texture or visible pores; dry and sensitive skin can use mild formulas less often. Skip acids on irritated or sunburnt skin.

How to use it

Start with two or three evenings a week and increase only if skin stays comfortable: mild tingling is normal, stinging is not. Do not use AHAs on the same night as retinol or spicule serums, and wear SPF 30 or higher every morning.

Medicube's Zero Pore range includes exfoliating pads, a serum and a cream with AHA, and SKIN1004 adds a little glycolic acid to a Poremizing toner with BHA and PHA. All are original Korean products, delivered within 24 hours in Yerevan.

Frequently asked

What is the difference between AHA and BHA?

AHAs dissolve in water and exfoliate the surface, which suits dullness and rough texture. BHA dissolves in oil and works inside pores, which suits blackheads and breakouts.

Do I really need sunscreen when using AHA?

Yes. AHAs can make skin more sensitive to UV, so wear SPF 30 or higher every morning and reapply outdoors.

Can I use AHA with retinol or vitamin C?

Not on the same night as retinol: alternate evenings. Vitamin C works well in the morning, with AHA in the evening.
