BHA
BHA — in skincare
BHA (beta hydroxy acid) in skincare usually means salicylic acid or gentler relatives such as betaine salicylate. Unlike water-soluble AHAs, BHA dissolves in oil, so it can work inside pores and loosen the oil and dead cells that clog them. That makes it the classic exfoliant for oily, congested skin.
What it does for skin
With regular use, BHA helps keep pores clear, so blackheads and bumps look less visible, pores look smaller and skin looks smoother and less shiny.
Who it suits
Oily, combination and breakout-prone skin with clogged pores; dry or sensitive skin may prefer a rinse-off foam. BHA products are not meant for children under three; avoid them if you are allergic to aspirin, and if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor before using leave-on BHA.
How to use it
Start with one BHA toner, pad or serum every other evening after cleansing, then moisturizer, and move to daily use if skin stays comfortable. Keep retinol and other acids for different nights, and wear SPF every morning.

Frequently asked
What is BHA, and is it the same as salicylic acid?
Almost. BHA means beta hydroxy acid, and in skincare that is nearly always salicylic acid or a gentler form of it.
BHA or AHA: which should I choose?
BHA for oily skin, blackheads and clogged pores; AHAs such as glycolic and lactic acid work on the surface and suit dry, dull skin.
Can I use BHA with retinol, vitamin C or niacinamide?
With niacinamide, yes. Use retinol on different nights, and on sensitive skin keep vitamin C for the morning and BHA for the evening.
How fast does BHA work?
Skin can feel smoother within a week or two. Clearer-looking pores and fewer visible blackheads usually take 4–8 weeks of regular use.
