Ceramides

Ceramides

Ceramides are lipids that make up about half of the fats in the skin barrier, the mortar between skin cells that keeps water in and irritants out. Skincare with ceramides helps replenish them when skin is dry, tight or easily irritated. They work best together with cholesterol and fatty acids, the other barrier lipids.

What it does for skin

Ceramide products help reduce water loss, so skin feels softer, smoother and more comfortable. A stronger barrier also helps skin look less red and react less to weather, harsh cleansers and actives.

Who it suits

Dry, flaky and sensitive skin, and anyone using retinol, acids or spicule serums. Oily skin benefits too, in lighter textures such as gel-creams or pads.

How to use it

Use a ceramide cream as the last step of your routine, morning and evening, with sunscreen on top in the morning. Ceramides have no known conflicts with other ingredients. On reactive days, pause harsh actives and keep the ceramide cream.

Frequently asked

What are ceramides?
Lipids that occur naturally in the skin barrier. In skincare they help replenish the barrier when it is dry or stressed, so skin holds on to moisture better.

Who needs ceramides?
Anyone whose skin feels dry, tight, flaky or easily irritated, and anyone using retinol, acids or spicule serums, which can weaken the barrier.

Can I use ceramides with retinol and acids?
Yes. Ceramides are among the best companions for strong actives because they help offset dryness and irritation. Apply a ceramide cream after retinol or acids, or on the nights in between.

How long do ceramides take to work?
Skin usually feels more comfortable within days; a calmer, less reactive barrier typically takes a few weeks of consistent use.
