Toner / Essence
Toner / Essence — how to choose
Korean toners are not the astringents that word describes in Western skincare. There is no alcohol, no stripping, and no purpose involving "removing residue after cleansing" — if your cleanser leaves residue, change the cleanser.
A Korean toner is a hydrating step. It goes on immediately after cleansing, while skin is still damp, and its job is to add water back and prepare skin so everything after it absorbs more easily.
Toner, essence, or both
The distinction is mostly texture and concentration. A toner is watery and goes first. An essence is slightly thicker and more concentrated, sitting between toner and serum. Many products are honestly somewhere in between, and the labels vary by brand more than by function.
You do not need both. If you use one hydrating step after cleansing, you have covered it.
Choosing one
For dehydration — hyaluronic acid, applied to damp skin and sealed with cream. Pat in several layers rather than one thick one; skin absorbs more that way.
For sensitivity — centella-based, with no acids. SKIN1004's Toning Toner is the plain one to fall back on when your skin is reacting and you want to simplify.
For congestion — BHA and PHA. These exfoliate, so they are a treatment step rather than a daily hydrating one. Start once a day, build slowly, and wear sunscreen.
For dullness — niacinamide, or rice extract for a gentler route. Anua's Rice 70 is 70% rice, which puts it at the centre of the formula rather than the end of the list.
How to apply
Hands or cotton pad both work. Hands waste less product; pads give light physical exfoliation and are better for applying to specific areas. For an exfoliating toner, a pad is usually better. For a hydrating one, hands.
Frequently asked
Do I actually need a toner?
No. It is the most skippable step in a routine. It is useful if your skin is dehydrated or if your serums do not spread easily, and unnecessary otherwise.
Can I use an exfoliating toner every day?
Some skin can, most should build up to it. Start twice a week and increase only if your skin stays comfortable.
Toner before or after serum?
Before. Thinnest to thickest is the general rule.
